Today is the 85th anniversary of the birth of Isaac Asimov (1920-1992), the prolific science and science fiction writer best known for his "Foundation" series about the fall and rebirth of the Galactic Empire, and also remembered for coining the words "robotics" and "psychohistory."
He wrote and published several books of limericks and light verse. In one he rhymed "Oregon" with "foregone." I wrote him that our state's name rhymes with "Corrigan" and not "foregone," not expecting to get a reply. Within two weeks I received a postcard from Dr. Asimov, thanking me for giving him the correct pronunciation of "Oregon" and pleading in apology that, according to his wife, his thick Brooklyn accent made all words rhyme with one another.
